A Touch of History, a Set of By-Laws By the end of a spirited meeting, beat 27X had unanimously adopted a set of by-laws and changed its name to Melrose/High Hopes NCPC. The addition of "Melrose" recognizes the historic name of the district, which makes up much of the beat. Under the new rules, officers will be nominated at the September 16 meeting, and the election will take place on November 18. City Councilmembers Ignacio De La Fuente and Nate Miley two of the three councilmembers who represent Melrose/High Hopes NCPC joined the meeting. The exchange of information included the new police nonemergency number, 777-3333. Measure K Funds at Work For the second year, funding from Measure K, the Kids-First ballot initiative, is helping to sustain our own Discovery Center. Up to 95 children per day take advantage of the summer program, available from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. In the fall, the Center is planning a drama program to teach youngsters alternative ways to handle difficult situations and resolve conflicts without violence. A Good Summer for Courtland Creek Courtland Creek Park will benefit from a crew of teenagers hired by Public Works to improve erosion control, clean up litter, and remove nonnative plants. The Discovery Center will help to maintain the native plants at the park. Melrose Library Neither Here nor There The Melrose Branch of the library has closed in preparation for the move to temporary quarters. As of July 15, there is no official date for reopening at the new site. I was also informed that the Library Administration is working to improve the message that callers get on the branch phone, "The number you have reached has been disconnected." |
