Laurel Merchants Association Newsby Dr. Maureen Dorsey |
The Laurel Merchants Association thanks everyone involved in our annual street festival. Held September 7, MacArthur Blvd. from 35th to High was transformed into a true community event as music, games, sales, and information booths lined the sidewalks and parking lots of Albertson's and Victory Outreach. |
We especially thank the committed merchant association members, LuTillian of Show' Out, Lease of Komodo Toys, and Luan of Laurel Bookstore. Without their tireless efforts, there would have been no festival. Great volunteer help was obtained with the assistance of our Laurel PTA leader, Kaye Stewart. It was a family affair, as Darryl Stewart served as the MC at the main stage. LMA partners with the City of Oakland to enhance and promote our business district. Financial and advisory support was an important factor for this year's festival. We are grateful for Gaddy Reyes' work from the Community and Economic Development Agency of the City of Oakland. Significant financial support from Wells Fargo Bank enabled us to headline the Bay Area Blues Society. Albertson's generously allowed us to set up the stage in their parking lot and contributed all the financial support of the Kid's Zone at Victory Outreach, where games and free treats were enjoyed. This year we expanded our reach by inviting local vendors and organizations to display their talents and wares. Occupying the first block of 39th Ave, festival goers could buy great products and learn about the community organizations working in the Laurel. Both candidates for the upcoming District 4 City Council race were present with their campaigns in full force. Future activities for the LMA will include joining with L-CAP, PTA, and NCPC groups serving our area for a candidates' forum. We will also join with these groups to provide an opportunity for the City of Oakland's Public Works agency to present to the community the designs for the Streetscape, a renovation of MacArthur Blvd. from 35th to High Street. |
