Maxwell Park Neighbors Support Local Schools

by Sarah Hipolito

The ABC's Aren't So Simple Anymore

Lisa Cartolano is determined to help our community make a difference in our local schools. She has two sons, Sam and Alex. Alex, the oldest, will be attending kindergarten in the fall. She suggested the formation of the Education Neighborhood Action Team, which held its first meeting in March. Meetings take place on fourth Thursdays, at 6:30 p.m.

When the Ed NAT contacted the schools, they found that Maxwell Park Elementary Parents recently met with the school district to improve school conditions and are starting a PTA. Their spokesperson, Richard Taylor, serves as a liaison with the Ed NAT.

The Ed NAT will work with the Maxwell Park Elementary Parents to raise money for projects, after-school programs, extracurricular activities, books for the library, and a welcome-back package of supplies for teachers. They will recruit volunteers to read to kids, help in the classroom and office, and maintain bulletin boards. The goal is to help the schools provide a fun, safe, and exciting learning environment, with positive adult role models.

The Ed NAT has three subcommittees, the volunteer committee, cleanup day committee (planning a clean-up day at Maxwell Park School on August 13), and the fundraising committee (currently in need of a leader). Do you have the skills to lend a hand in any of these committees? Improving schools improves neighborhoods. Get involved and offer your expertise!
