DIA Celebrates 55 Years
Since inception in 1953 the Dimond Improvement Association (DIA) has advocated for residents and businesses in the Dimond area. Beginning as a group of homeowners affected by a landslide at McKillop and Sheffield, the DIA evolved to work on city planning in Dimond, blighted properties and business attraction, crime and public safety concerns, and community building events.
The DIA currently has a number of active projects thanks in part to the wonderful tradition of volunteerism in the area. Visit DimondNews.org for history and work in progress. While at the Web site sign up or renew your membership and contribute to the history of one of Oakland's oldest volunteer-run community associations.
On Friday, November 14, 7 p.m. at Full Moon Seafood House, 2042 Macarthur Blvd. at Dimond Ave., the DIA will host a 55th Anniversary Party and Community Mixer. Join friends, neighbors, and business owners for appetizers, drinks, and live soulful jazz, in a relaxing, social environment. All are welcome. Proceeds from the silent auction of historic Dimond photos will go directly back to the community. Come out and enjoy the Dimond. Celebrate a history of involvement.
22X Neighborhood Coalition for Positive Change
Monday, November 17, 7 p.m., at the Greek Orthodox Church, will be the last general meeting of 2008 for the 22X NCPC. Attendees will vote on the 2009 Steering Committee slate. Following the vote, Oakland City Attorney John Russo will speak about the current direction of Oakland's Misdemeanor Court and steps being taken to prevent petty criminals from progressing to more heinous offenses.
To make a nomination for the Steering Committee, contact the Nominating Committee through DanielSwafford\@aol.com.
Additional projects underway by the NCPC working groups that need community, especially Dimond, involvement are:'
Nov 1: Planting at Dimond Gateway garden (MacArthur/Lincoln); 9:30 a.m. Supervised by garden designer Tricia Christopher.
Nov 8: Planting at Hwy 13, Joaquin Miller exit (Monterey side); 9 a.m.
Nov 15: Dimond area cleanup walk at MacArthur/Fruitvale, 10 a.m.; bring gloves. For more info on all events, email krussell\@russell-gordon.com. Your small contribution makes a big difference.
2009 Dimond History Calendar
Does your 2009 calendar have police contacts and helpful phone numbers for your neighborhood, important dates of local events and activities, rare historic photos of your street, maybe your house? It will if you purchase the 2009 Dimond History Calendar. The best part of your calendar purchase is that all proceeds go toward beautification projects and economic development in the Dimond area.
The 2009 calendar will be available by Thanksgiving at Farmer Joe's, La Farine, and Paws & Claws. DIA members receive a discount and can preorder by emailing dia\@dimondnews.org.
