Boulevard Bitesby Tracey Rolandelli |
### I had the pleasure of talking to Jerry Scheberies, who owns Scheberies Auto at 4412 MacArthur Blvd, right at High St. Jerry is one of the 1959 NCAA Championship Boxing Team members who have been inducted into the San Jose State University Sports Hall of Fame, presented on September 12 by the Order of Sparta, the university's organization of alumni athletes and coaches. When the university called him, he thought they were mistaking him for his 1950 NC U.S. Amateur Champ brother, Jack. Jerry is a former Marine and was the wrestling coach at Skyline High School for 22 years, as wrestling is a love for him also. He is a native of Oakland and a valuable asset to our neighborhood. His desk and walls are covered in thank-you letters appreciating his help and kindness to customers, neighbors, and students. Many of the latter have a father figure in Jerry, as he makes himself available to them for help and guidance. Jerry told me he started boxing in the Marine Corps "to get out of duties", but he recalls boot camp as "fun, because nothing is hard if you put your mind to it!" His past in both the Corps and sports has given him an outlook in life of enjoying problem solving and challenges. From 1962 to 1970, he raced cars in the Sports Car Club of America, winning many events with his Lotus Super 7. More than once Jerry has come to the aid of people on his block as a crime stopper, using his wrestling and Marine training to tackle or fireman-carry a criminal! His shop has beautiful retro metal signs for auto works and racing history, which Jerry made himself, using aluminum and auto paints. Our area is lucky to have a neighbor like this around. ### You may have seen Paris Cartier giving horseback rides at a local park or block party. Paris tells the Metro he is trying to open a storefront for youth activities at Fairfax and High at the site of the old M&W Liquors. He's looking for community and financial support. Check out his Web site at www.BayAreaCowboysandCowgirls.com. ### As the holiday season is already upon us, the Metro will be back on news standsFebruary 1. And this Boulevard Bites will be my last entry, so thank you for reading. Have a wonderful holiday season and 2009 everyone. |
