Pets
Some might say that a good barometer of how well a civilization is doing is how well it treats its animals. Here in Leona Heights, we don't seem to need any ballot measures to ensure that the animals we live with here have comfortable and happy lives. In fact, most pets who call our neighborhood home are doing far better than many children in the world. It's heartening to see so many of us out walking our dogs or paying respects to a local cat. These pets of ours are our ambassadors, and they help bring our neighborhood together.

These are challenging times for us all though. Luckily for most, everything truly is relative. For those of us still alive who lived through the Great Depression, jobs were never taken for granted. I knew that without my paper route delivering The Tribune, there'd be no new shoes for me for a long time. Living through these days we need to keep faith and use our heads. A penny saved is definitely a penny earned. My family turns those lights out when we're not in a room. We use water with the idea that every drop that goes down the drain represents money down the drain too. And we've gotten used to wearing a sweatshirt or fleece around the house instead of turning the heat on so high.'
This Metro edition will be the last for 2008, so I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a most satisfying and healthy holiday season. We'll see you here next in 2009!'
