Boulevard Bites

### Congratulations to the MacArthur Metro Alameda County Food Bank Team. The team donated over 300 hours of service through June 2009 in the name of the Metro. Each team member received a certificate and gift basket containing fruit and candy, and also earned great thanks from the Food Bank volunteer coordinator. Our thanks, too, go to Susan Audap, Judy Greenhouse, Adamma Ison, Marcella Woods, Kathy Mitchell, and Dal Sellman.

## Libby Schaaf sent word that her aunt, photojournalist Mary Morris Lawrence, passed away in August at the age of 95. In 1935 Mary became the first female photojournalist for AP. She was a renowned photographer with photo credits in, among others, Look and Life magazine. Long-time readers may remember Mary as a Metro photographer and Laurel resident. Read a bit about Mary at www.macarthurmetro.org/199812/news/2150 and you might get a glimpse of why Libby says "In lieu of flowers, Mary would ask that you join the League of Women Voters, shop at Farmer Joe's, write a letter to the editor, or break a glass ceiling!"

### Residents and merchants of Oakland raised such an outcry over the raised parking fees and the extended time limits that city officials were forced to make some changes. Parking kiosk receipts now are valid to the time on the receipt even if you re-park your car at a meter or a different kiosk. Although kiosk and meter hours are still extended until 8 p.m., a three-hour limit applies after five.'

###' Mills College has been named by the Princeton Review (PR) as one of the nation's greenest colleges. The PR said the Mills campus environment is "a pretty oasis…good for taking relaxing walks...." and "social awareness and political activism is practically a prerequisite among the student population, which principally consists of environmentally aware, intelligent women who enjoy learning and making a difference." You go, girls.

### The Metro looks forward to the arrival of Anthony Batts, the new chief of police appointed by Mayor Dellums. Chief Batts, currently with the Long Beach Police Department, told the Long Beach Press-Telegram he was at Oakland's memorial service for the four fallen officers. He knew the Oakland Police Deparment (OPD) job was for him "when he saw the disconnect between the police department and the city it serves." That was the very moment when we citizens sent a great outpouring of sympathy and empathy for the OPD. If that looked like a disconnect, what must we look like on an ordinary day?

### Dear readers, like many nonprofit organizations, the Metro needs your financial help. Whether you have enjoyed the Metro for the past 20 years or are a new reader, can you show your support by making a contribution? Use the coupon on page 2, and please become a Money Honey or a Friend.'
