Mural Dedication Launches Public Art Program

Dimond residents, local artists, and community leaders gathered on April 24 to dedicate the recently completed Dimond Gateway Mural located at the corner of Lincoln Ave. and MacArthur Blvd. District 4 Councilmember and Vice Mayor Jean Quan led the ceremony and acknowledged mural artist Kristi Holohan of Arts & Creative Expression, as well as the local youth and various sponsors involved in the mural project. The mural represents the effort of Dimond Public Art (DPA), a new volunteer group working collaboratively to bring more public art to the Dimond community. Family Fun at Dimond Picnic

'The community is invited to the 6th Annual Dimond Picnic on July 18th in Dimond Park.' In addition to delicious barbecue, this year's event will feature performances by Circus Bella, belly dancers, and Women's Will theater troupe, as well as the Dimond Park Fine Arts Show & Sale, juggling workshops, tours of the park, and children's free swim at Dimond Pool.' The event is sponsored by the Dimond Recreation Center, Dimond Improvement Association, and Two Star Market.' Volunteers are needed to help put on this free event.' Circus Bella Workshop Coming Up in June

Circus Bella, Oakland's own open air, one ring circus,will perform at the annual Dimond Neighborhood Picnic on July 18 at Dimond Park.'

Since this is a free performance, Circus Bella has a call out for community support. Donations can be made at www.circusbella.com.

Meanwhile, learn the basics of juggling at a special workshop at Dimond Rec Center. Circus Bella is offering juggling lessons on June 12 and June 19 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. All skill levels are welcome, ages eight and older. See more information at www.circusbella.com/workshops or call 967-4358.


Daniel Swafford to Run for District 4 Council Seat

Daniel Swafford, co-Chair of NCPC Beat 22X, has announced his campaign for Oakland's District 4 City Council seat. That seat will be open; incumbent Jean Quan is running as a candidate for Oakland Mayor in the November city election.

Stan Dodson, Manager of La Farine Bakery, is one of those in the Dimond who have worked with Daniel and are excited about his run for office. He commented, "Daniel inspired me to get involved in the Dimond community and helped prepare me to take on a leadership role." A consulting professional, teacher, and community activist, Daniel is helping to transform the Dimond into a vibrant neighborhood.
