###' An Orchid to to Marty Kahn for repairing, repainting, and reinstalling the "Welcome to Redwood Heights" sign on 35th Avenue. Reinstalling took place in late April with the help of Randy Fenton, of the Redwood Heights Landscape Committee; Dean Sellman, of Mt. Shasta; and Dal Sellman.

###' Every year, hundreds of successful students graduate from local schools with honors and awards. Since the Metro is always short on space, we have selected one student to receive an Orchid as a stand-in for her peers and in her own honor.

An Orchid to Johana Yesenia Peña, this year's Salutatorian from St. Elizabeth High School. Johana, who wants to be a doctor, is the recipient of several scholarships. She has been accepted by numerous colleges, including several in the UC system. She'll no doubt make special use of one scholarship that provides funds for summer research. Last summer, she spent 22 days in China doing community service.

###' Orchids to the neighbors who, for no reward other than the common good and esthetic delight, plant and maintain the pocket parks, medians, and traffic islands, at Highway 580 and 35th Ave., Lincoln and MacArthur, 38th & Suter, upper High St., High and Courtland, High & Redding, along Ygnacio, and others.

###' An Orchid to Bryan Zheng, sixth grader at the American Indian Public Charter School. Bryan once again did his community and school proud when he placed second at the Alameda County Spelling Bee and represented our county in the State Bee on May 15 at Sonoma St. University.
